Expanded Learning Opportunities

Keeping our lights on and doors open longer to provide children with enriching opportunities before, during and after school as well during the summer ensures that all children can access enriching experiences.

ELO Work Group Mission Statement: Providing accessible, high-quality, student-driven expanded learning opportunities to all District 69 students before, during, and after school.

ELO Work Group Initiative

Implement a new volunteer-based tutoring program for Edison students.

The ELO Work Group meets every other month in the evenings throughout the school year.  If you are interested in joining the committee or receiving regular updates, contact Sarah Rankin, Community Schools Program Director at rankins@skokie69.net  or 847-675-7666 x1092.

ELO Programs include:

Action for Book Club (Lincoln)
In partnership with Skokie Public Library, Action for Book Club provides in-school book club sessions for 6th grade students working to foster literacy skills and provide social emotional development through volunteer opportunities. 

Band, Choir, Orchestra (Edison, Lincoln)
These groups meet after school at Edison and before school at Lincoln (Overture Hour). 

After-School Programs, Clubs, and Sports (District-wide)
There are a variety of clubs, sports, and programs that occur after school at Madison, Edison, and Lincoln. Sessions run throughout the year, and are facilitated by a variety of partners including the Morton Grove Park District, Skokie Park District, and Y.O.U.

Chess Tournament (District-wide)
A biannual tournament is open to all students K-8.  No prior chess experience necessary and each child plays 5 matches.

D.E.A.R. Week (Madison)
D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Week takes place each winter, providing a week full of fun literacy-focused activities.  Parents and other community members are invited into classrooms as guest readers. 

Famished for Fiction (Edison)
In partnership with the Morton Grove Public Library, during the lunch hour 5th grade students learn about new fiction books, as well as receive a book and opportunities to join book chats.

Junior Achievement Programs (District-wide)
In partnership with Junior Achievement, students participate in free educational programs on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship.  These programs are facilitated by community business volunteers and early education high school students.

Pre-K Grow A Reader Program (Madison)
In partnership with the Skokie Public Library, the Grow A Reader program supports preschool families to share 1,000 books before kindergarten.  Each week children bring home books providing families a fun way to enjoy reading together and foster literacy growth.

Science Fair (Edison)
All students are invited to enter a research-based project that is judged by engineers and other science experts.

Student Ambassadors (Edison, Lincoln)
Student Ambassadors are responsible for welcoming new students and community members into the building.  Students receive training at the beginning of the school year and work with teacher sponsors to support many students and events throughout the year.

Summer Programming (District-wide)
In partnership with the Skokie Park District and Y.O.U., summer programs include enrichment, academics, and field trip opportunities.
